Brainscan 21 explores my recognition of being in an emotionally abusive relationship, the attempts on both parts to right wrongs, the failure to do so, and gathering the strength to take the next step. What if your private life in your relationship is vastly different than what other people see? When do you know you are in an emotionally abusive relationship? How to you gain the strength to get out of it? What do you do when you know you can't handle the burden alone? What do you do when you feel so alone and terrified of the consequences of leaving, when if it means losing friends, a home, a job and a way life that you love? These are just some of the ideas explored in this zine through a three year personal narrative that also challenges you to examine your relationships with power, to identify how you express the power you have, and also how you relate to the power that of others possess. But most of all this, zine is about revelation, rebirth, and growth. It's an in-depth look at an alternative form of birth control. The author details every aspect of on the topic. From explaining what an IUD is, to the politics of IUDs in the United States, to her own personal experiences with the device, from insertion to healing to sex. Price: $1.00 TO ORDER Revolver Dauphin - 1/4 size Quirky writing leads to cool graphics leads to a good read. Seems like everyone has personal zine out today...yet this one seems to stand out above the rest due to the quality of writing. A personal literary adventure about growing up - 1 part painful 1- part beautiful. Price: $2.00 TO ORDER Stolen Sharpie Revolution - 3rd Edition, 154 pages, 1/4 size A brief, but engaging, and eminently useful guide to doing a zine. From tools, to layout, copying, printing, trading, promotion, ordering, mailing, distribution, and a whole lot more. Over 150 (albeit pocket sized!) packed pages. The new third edition includes 32 more pages of distributor listings, stores, and libraries that work with zines. Price: $3.00 TO ORDER Suburban Blight - Issue No. 3, 30 pages, 1/2 size Suburban Blight is a magazine of sorts. Each issue focuses on different topics and offers up different viewpoints from different authors. Issue number 3 focuses on religion - notably Christianity. The articles are really good. I’m not writing that just because I am trying to sell the zine but this was one of the first zines that I really learned from Not that I am a scholar on religion or anything but I really learned a lot from this zine. I found myself talking to people about the articles and showing the zine to them. I have to say it was enlightening. Price: $1.00 TO ORDER Suburban Blight - Issue No. 4, 30 pages, 1/2 size While issue no.3 focused on religion issue no.4 of Suburban Blight doesn’t really have a clear theme, but never the less, the articles are once again top notch. I guess you could say that the underlying theme to this issue is examining the signs around you. Articles titled “The Power of Words”, “The Facade of Debate”, and “The Logic of Withdrawal” are all really excellent. Plus there are lengthy features on Feminism and Alternative Religions and The Genocide in Rwanda. And for entertainment there are CD reviews, DVD reviews (of the white stripes and Cat Power DVDs) and a Sleater Kinney show review. Price: $1.00 TO ORDER The Way It Is - Issue No. 1, 18 pages, 1/2 size This zine opens up with the story of a birth. The author's birth of her son Killian was a profound experience. Even though it was at a birthing center she felt it was still not how she wanted her son to be born. Thus begins the zine which is about the authors experiences in dealing with raising her son the way she wants to raise him, not the way mainstream society deems. Why does a mother have to justify at every turn that she wants to raise her son vegan for his first year? This zine is journal of a first time mother....appropriate for anyone. This first issue contains interviews with fashion designer Tiffe Fermaint, comedian Ryan McKee, and the band The Budget Sinatra. Also included are writing by Sir John Wackness and Alison Walling, and "Lame As Always" drawings by Sammy Black. We've also got record reviews, and a d.i.y. article on how to create your own internet radio show. Check it out!!! This issue contains interviews with photographer Steve Weiss, Tony Ash the creator of artish.org, musicians Brodie Hubbard, Pete from the Shaving Party, Back Ted n' Ted, and Alseep in the Sea. Also included are poetry by Ross Kenyon and a review of 2004's Phunky Radio Show. The d.i.y. section in this issue teaches you how to brew your own beer (written by the Bitches Brew Crew).
